Does EMDR Help With Anxiety and Trauma? What to Know Before Starting Therapy

If you’ve heard about EMDR therapy, you may be wondering whether it can help with trauma, anxiety, or

difficult experiences that still affect you today.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured form of psychotherapy that can help people process distressing memories and reduce the emotional intensity connected to them.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR uses an eight-phase treatment process. Therapy begins with understanding your history, identifying treatment goals, and developing coping strategies.

During later phases, you may focus briefly on a distressing memory while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating tapping.

The goal is not to erase the memory. Instead, EMDR may help the experience feel less overwhelming and easier to think about without the same level of distress.

How Can EMDR Help With Trauma?

EMDR has been extensively studied as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Traumatic experiences can sometimes continue to trigger fear, distress, negative beliefs, or physical reactions long after the event has ended.

EMDR can help clients process those experiences so they feel more like something that happened in the past rather than something that continues to control the present.

Can EMDR Help With Anxiety?

Anxiety can have many causes, so EMDR is not appropriate for every person experiencing anxiety.

However, when anxiety is connected to distressing experiences, painful memories, fears, or past events, EMDR may be one treatment option to consider.

A therapist can help determine what is contributing to your anxiety and whether EMDR or another approach would best fit your needs.

What Happens During an EMDR Session?

EMDR does not begin by immediately asking you to relive your most difficult experiences.

Early sessions typically focus on understanding your concerns, preparing for treatment, developing coping skills, and identifying appropriate treatment goals.

When you are ready, your therapist guides you through the processing phase while checking in with you throughout the session.

How Long Does EMDR Take?

There is no single timeline.

Some clients are working through one specific experience, while others have several concerns or a more complex history. Treatment length depends on your symptoms, goals, coping resources, and individual needs.

Can EMDR Be Done Online?

Yes. When clinically appropriate, EMDR can be provided through secure telehealth by a trained therapist.

I provide online therapy to adolescents and adults throughout Texas in English and Spanish. Treatment may include EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, and other approaches based on your individual needs.

As an EMDR-certified therapist and EMDR Approved Consultant, I understand that starting trauma therapy can feel intimidating. Treatment should move at a pace that respects your comfort and readiness.

Is EMDR Right for You?

You do not need to know exactly what type of therapy you need before reaching out.

If you are considering EMDR or online therapy in Texas, I offer a free 15-minute introductory consultation to discuss what you are experiencing, answer questions, and determine whether we may be a good fit.
